A new museum dedicated to Michelangelo Antonioni opens in Ferrara, displaying his personal archive and intended to be a dynamic “space” for studying the relationships between Antonioni and various artists, filmmakers and intellectuals. The first project aimed at highlighting the connections between Antonioni and the visual arts is Out of focus, exhibition curated by Andrea Bruciati and organized by Ferrara Arte Foundation in collaboration with Villa Adriana Institute and Villa d’Este – VILLÆ.
The exhibition aims to highlight the different artistic translation of the naturalistic canon proposed by Giorgio Morandi (Bologna, 1890-1964) and Cy Twombly (Lexington, 1928 – Rome, 2011) through an unprecedented comparison with Michelangelo Antonioni (Ferrara, 1912 – Rome, 2007), whose relationship with painting has ancient roots. They approach works seemingly distant in style and iconography that on the contrary, in their raison d’être, are extremely akin to the poetic vision of the filmmaker. Morandi’s paintings and Twombly’s “nature” photographic shots, juxtaposed with the archival materials on display in the museum and the Ferrara filmmaker’s conceptual legacy, underscore the innovative exploration of the devices of vision accomplished by the three artists. The exhibition makes it possible to rediscover the more intimate side of their research in light of both the historical tradition that connotes the genres and the new feeling of their time, which manifests itself in a minimal alphabet, a language that is only apparently simple and which, on the contrary, expresses the essence of reality. While Morandi stubbornly investigates it by painting solitary landscapes and still lifes made of common objects; Twombly translates stimuli from nature into emotion with a rapid and vibrant language. Light, the blurred morphology of fragments, compositional coordinates and their iteration are elements that link the work of these artists to Antonioni’s vision.
